God's song

“The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17 (KJV)

What does this mean?

Zephaniah has spent most of his short book warning Judah about judgment, but he ends with a promise to the people who remain: God himself is in their midst, strong to save them. Then comes the most tender picture in the verse — God delights in his people with gladness, and he sings over them with joy. One line in the old wording says God 'rests in his love,' a picture of him quiet and content in his delight over them; some understand it as God quieting his people with his love.

What does this teach us?

God's joy over you is not quiet or reluctant. The verse pictures a God who does not merely tolerate his people, he rejoices over them out loud, like a parent singing over a child, and that joy is part of what it means to be saved.

How can we apply this?

If you have ever pictured God as stern and distant, let this verse correct the picture: he sings over you. Sit with that for a minute today, and let the thought that God delights in you soften the shame or fear you have been carrying.

Reflection

What would it mean to believe that God delights in you and sings over you with joy?

Prayer

Lord, I have pictured you as distant and stern, and I have carried shame for too long. Thank you that you rejoice over me with singing, and help me to believe that your delight in me is real. Amen.
