No condemnation

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Romans 8:1 (KJV)

What does this mean?

Paul has just described the inner struggle with sin in the last chapter, wanting to do good and failing. Now he turns the corner: there is no guilty verdict hanging over people who belong to Christ Jesus. The verse as the King James gives it goes on to describe those people as living by the Spirit rather than by the flesh, a thought Paul returns to a few verses later.

What does this teach us?

In Christ, your verdict has changed. The guilt that once defined you no longer does, and the proof of that new life is a life led by the Spirit, not by the old patterns of the flesh.

How can we apply this?

When guilt from your past speaks up today, answer it with the plain truth: in Christ, I am not condemned. Then live like it, take one step in the Spirit's direction, and let your life agree with your verdict.

Reflection

What guilt from your past still speaks to you, and what would it mean to answer it with this verse?

Prayer

Father, my past keeps condemning me even though you have set me free. Remind me today that I stand free in Christ, and help me to walk by your Spirit. Amen.
