God's love

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8 (KJV)

What does this mean?

God showed His love for us in a remarkable way: Christ died for us while we were still sinners, not after we had cleaned ourselves up. The timing is the point — God's love came first, while we were still far from Him. Christians understand this death as the way God reconciled us to Himself, though they describe exactly how that reconciliation works in different ways.

What does this teach us?

God's love is not a reward for good behavior; it moves toward us while we are still broken. This means no one has to earn their way into being loved by God. It also sets the pattern for how we love others — first, not after they deserve it.

How can we apply this?

When you feel unworthy, remember that God's love reached you at your worst, not your best. Stop keeping score on yourself before coming to Him in prayer. And look for one person today who is hard to love, and show them kindness before they earn it.

Reflection

Where in your life are you still trying to earn a love that was already given?

Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me before I deserved it. Help me rest in that love instead of striving to earn it, and teach me to love others the same way — first, and freely. Amen.
