Comfort in anxiety

“In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.”

Psalm 94:19 (KJV)

What does this mean?

The psalmist is troubled, wicked people seem to be winning, and his mind is crowded with anxious thoughts. He says that when worries multiply inside him, God's comfort brings his soul joy. The verse does not say the worries disappear; it says that in the middle of them, God's comfort is real enough to delight a weary heart.

What does this teach us?

Anxiety and joy can live in the same heart. God's comfort does not always remove the trouble, but it meets you inside it, and one moment of his comfort can carry you through a day full of worry.

How can we apply this?

When anxious thoughts start crowding in, stop and name three of them out loud, then name three comforts God has given you: a promise, a friend, a morning's peace. Let the comforts stand beside the worries, and let them speak louder.
