Comfort for grief

“To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD , that he might be glorified.”

Isaiah 61:3 (KJV)

What does this mean?

Isaiah is speaking to people who have known grief and loss, those who mourn in Zion, the city that has been broken. He says God will give them something beautiful in place of the ashes of mourning, gladness in place of grief, and a song of praise in place of a crushed spirit. Christians read this as a promise that finds its fullest meaning in Christ: Jesus read from this same passage of Isaiah in the synagogue and said it was being fulfilled in him.

What does this teach us?

God does not ask grieving people to pretend they are fine. His promise is exchange, not denial: beauty instead of ashes, joy instead of mourning, the grief is real, and so is the comfort that meets it.

How can we apply this?

If you are grieving, let yourself grieve honestly instead of rushing past it, and let one small beautiful thing into the day: a walk, a song, a friend's company. If someone near you is grieving, do not try to fix it; sit with them, and be one small piece of the comfort God promises.

Reflection

What grief are you carrying, and what would one small piece of beauty look like in the middle of it?

Prayer

Lord, my heart is heavy with grief and I do not know how to carry it. Give me beauty in place of these ashes, joy in place of this mourning, and help me to praise you even while I grieve. Amen.
