Through the waters

“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

Isaiah 43:2 (KJV)

What does this mean?

Isaiah is speaking to Israel in exile, a people who feel abandoned and overwhelmed. God says that when they pass through deep water, he will be with them, and the rivers will not sweep them away, and when they walk through fire, they will not be burned. The promise is not that the water and fire will never come, but that God will be with his people in the middle of them.

What does this teach us?

God's promise is presence, not exemption. The waters still rise and the fire still burns, but they do not get the last word, the God who walks through them with you does.

How can we apply this?

If you are in deep water right now, illness, debt, grief, stop waiting for the trouble to disappear before you believe God is with you. Look for him in the middle of it: in a friend's help, in a verse that steadies you, in the strength to get through one more day.

Reflection

What deep water are you passing through, and where have you seen God with you in the middle of it?

Prayer

Lord, the waters are high and I am afraid of being swept away. Be with me in this deep place, hold me steady, and bring me through to the other side. Amen.
